About Matthew Ameer
Matthew Ameer is an Of Counsel attorney with Gavvl Law whose career has been devoted largely to litigation. Admitted to the Ohio bar in 2013 after earning his Juris Doctor from the University of Toledo College of Law, Matthew has spent roughly 90% of his career litigating cases of every major type — civil (including matters for small and medium-sized businesses), criminal (both defense and prosecution), juvenile, and domestic relations and family law, including service as a Guardian ad Litem.
Matthew has tried more than 40 jury trials spanning civil and criminal cases, over 60 bench trials across civil, criminal, and domestic matters, and several appeals. He credits his close mentors — who together carry centuries of jury-trial experience — for grounding him not only in law practice and litigation, but in the human psychology and sociology that shape how disputes are really resolved. Before law school, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy and English from Kent State University, and that analytical foundation still informs his work.
At the heart of Matthew's family law practice are divorce and custody matters, along with the juvenile cases that often intersect with them. While he is, in his own words, a thrill junkie for trying cases big and small to verdict, he believes the greatest value a litigator offers is evaluating a case from every relevant angle — legal, procedural, factual, practical, and philosophical — and then articulating that analysis clearly to the client.
For that reason, Matthew is committed to resolving cases through effective negotiation whenever possible. He believes the preferred form of dispute resolution is to "make your own justice" through a well-crafted settlement, rather than leaving it to a judge or jury to decide where to divide things. And when negotiation will not do it, he knows the difference between being prepared for a fight and being ready for one — and makes sure he is both, keeping clients informed and in control at every step.
A member of the Ohio State Bar Association and a former four-year executive member of the Medina County Bar Association, Matthew serves clients across Ohio's 88 counties through Gavvl Law, including the Columbus, Cincinnati, Cleveland, and Dayton metros.
