How Much Is It to Hire an Attorney for a Divorce, Custody, or Family Law Case in Ohio?

One of the most common questions in family law is how much is this going to cost — and can I afford to hire a lawyer? Sometimes not hiring a lawyer can cost you more in the end than any retainer, but we also understand that not every family has thousands of dollars laying around. Family law issues aren't part of anyone's long-term plan, and budgeting for groceries, rent or a mortgage, and car payments takes priority. At Gavvl Law we're on a mission to make hiring an exceptional attorney accessible and affordable. While we do not offer pro bono (free) legal support, we offer numerous payment options to help — and which ones are available depends on whether you choose full representation or a flat-fee limited-scope service.

Two Service Models, Two Sets of Payment Options

How you can pay depends on the kind of representation you hire us for. Full representation is billed as a retainer plus hourly fees, and Ohio attorney trust-accounting rules (IOLTA requirements) restrict how those retainers can be handled. Limited-scope (flat-fee) services are billed as a flat fee per service, which gives you more flexibility — including our in-house Gavvl Direct plan (no credit check) on services of $2,000 or more.

Paying for Full Representation

Full representation covers complex or contested cases that need ongoing attorney involvement. Because these matters are billed as a retainer plus hourly fees, the payment methods are designed to comply with Ohio IOLTA trust-accounting rules:

  • Pay in Full — secure card payment on our payment page, with immediate retainer activation.
  • Affirm financing — split the retainer into monthly payments with instant approval and a soft credit check that does not affect your credit score.

Full representation requires an initial retainer, or deposit, of $3,500. This is not a flat fee, and we are upfront about that: the money is held in a trust account with the firm and remains yours until it is earned. Your attorney draws from it as work is done at their hourly rate — for example, at $300 per hour, a motion that takes 2 hours to draft and file draws $600 — and you may need to add funds as work continues. Klarna, PayPal Pay Later, and Gavvl Direct are not available for full-representation retainers because trust-accounting rules restrict how those funds can be held.

Paying for Limited-Scope (Flat-Fee) Services

When your matter is handled as a flat-fee service, you have the widest range of options. Choose whichever fits your budget:

  • Pay in Full — one-time secure payment on our payment page; Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover accepted.
  • Affirm — 0–30% APR over 3, 6, or 12 months, with instant approval and a soft credit check.
  • Klarna — interest-free "Pay in 4" or longer 6–36 month financing.
  • PayPal — "Pay in 4" or "Pay Monthly," with 0% APR options where available.
  • Gavvl Direct — our in-house plan with no credit check required, on limited-scope services of $2,000 or more.

Gavvl Direct In-House Payment Plans

Gavvl Direct lets you spread a limited-scope flat fee of $2,000 or more over time without applying to a third-party lender and without a credit check. There is no interest and no plan fee; your exact figures are calculated when you enroll. Here is how it works:

  • Start now with 60% down — pay 60% of the fee and services begin.
  • Three monthly payments — the remaining 40% is paid in three equal monthly installments, the first due 28 days after your initial payment. No penalty for paying early.
  • Signed agreement, no rush hearings — a payment plan agreement is signed before enrollment, and the plan is not available for hearing services scheduled within 14 days.

Payment Terms

Gavvl Direct plans (limited-scope services of $2,000 or more) charge no interest and no plan fee; the remaining 40% is paid in three monthly installments beginning 28 days after the initial payment. Missed or incomplete payments after services have begun are subject to a $50 late fee for payments not remedied within five (5) days of the scheduled due date. Approval and terms for Affirm, Klarna, and PayPal Pay Later are subject to their respective underwriting criteria.

Other Financing Options (Third-Party Lenders)

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to hire a family law attorney in Ohio?
It depends on the level of help you need. Gavvl Law offers flat-fee limited-scope services with the exact price published before you begin, and full representation on a $3,500 initial retainer (the retainer is a deposit against work at your attorney's hourly rate — not the total cost of the case). A $25 consultation gets you a written quote for your situation.
What is a retainer and how does a trust account work?
When you pay a retainer, that money is held in a trust account with the firm and remains yours until it is earned. Your attorney draws from it as work is done on your case at their hourly rate, and you may need to add funds as work continues.
Do you offer payment plans with no credit check?
Yes. Limited-scope services of $2,000 or more qualify for Gavvl Direct, our no-credit-check in-house plan: pay 60% down and services begin, then pay the remaining 40% in three equal monthly payments, the first due 28 days after your initial payment. There is no interest and no plan fee. A $50 late fee applies to any payment not brought current within 5 days of its due date, a signed payment plan agreement is required before enrollment, and the plan is not available for hearings scheduled within 14 days. Affirm, Klarna, and PayPal Pay Later remain available on every limited-scope service.
Can I finance my legal fees through Affirm, Klarna, or PayPal?
Yes, for flat-fee limited-scope services. Full representation retainers can be financed through Affirm via our 8AM+LawPay partnership. Checking your eligibility with these providers does not impact your credit score; approval and terms are set by the provider.
